Biography

award winner in all of these categories.
When Rol Lampitoc arrived in Canada in 1972,
he was already a painter of note whose works graced the homes and
boardrooms of the Philippine elite and the American Embassy in Manila.
Mr. Lampitoc studied fine arts at the University of the Philippines
and has always pursued a career in art. He has been and premiere
portrait painter. In Canada, he taught art at Windsor’s St.
Clair College and Willistead Art Gallery.
Some of his portrait paintings now hang in the University
of Toronto’s Woodsworth College, Emmanuel College, Engineering
College, Centenary Hospital and other private commissions. These
commissions include the Philippine Presidents Carlos P. Garcia and
Diosdado Macapagal, both in 1959; Chigago Mayor Richard Daly in
1960; American President Harry Truman in 1969; and Detroit Mayor
Roman S. Gribbs in 1973.
Although Mr. Lampitoc’s passion is in portraiture,
his works include a broad spectrum of subjects executed in a variety
of media, including watercolours, pastel and oil. Mr. Lampitoc’s
work is a celebration of colour and form invoking an intensely emotional
experience.
In 1972, Mr Lampitoc won the most coveted award
in the Philippine National Art Exhibit, print category. He was then
asked to represent Philippines at the “International Salon
Sud” in Paris. In 1981, Mr. Lampitoc won an award in the internationally
attended portrait competition in New York City. His work, “The
Model” was one of those chosen from the 108 finalist to hang
at the 5th Annual Juried Show of the Blue Mountain Foundation of
the Arts in 1985. Mr. Lampitoc’s pastel “Inday”,
gained him the honour of being the only Canadian accepted into the
Pastel Society of America at that time. In 1989, he won the “First
Prize Award” and the “Most Favourite in the Show”
of the Pastel Society of Canada.
In the summer of 1987, he experienced Caribana Festival
in Toronto and came forth with his interpretation of the flamboyance,
and merry-making of the festivities. At the Arts Guild of Scarborough
Show in 1987, he won two awards, first prize for “The Band”,
and “Moments of Reflection”, In 1992, the City of Guelph
sponsered a “Mardi Gras” art show where he won First
Prize and Best in the Show.
His talent in various media brought invitations
to exhibit in major cities including Tokyo, Detroit and New York.
He has been invited to exhibit on of his pastel painting during
the opening of the National Gallery of Ottawa on 1988, featuring
the work of Edgar Degas. His work has shown at the National Archives
together with the works of other pastel painters from all over the
world.
